The Perinatal Support Program is part of the ATAPS (Access to Allied Psychological Services/ Better Outcomes in Mental Health Care) program that was introduced by the Federal Government in 2008 and is designed to improve prevention, early detection of and intervention for ante and post natal depression and provide better support and treatment to expectant mothers. The General Practice Alliance South Gippsland manages the program on behalf of the Federal Government.
This program allows a person to have up to 12 free counselling sessions (voucher system) with a specially trained allied health professional. Groups may also be available and are in addition to the 12 counselling sessions.
Any GP practicing in the divisional area can refer to this program. Similarly, midwives, maternal and child health nurses etc. may refer a person to see their GP with the view to developing a mental health care plan and referral to the perinatal program.
In our region, there are five allied health providers with specific clinical training in perinatal health and wellbeing. They have qualifications in either Psychology or Social Work. For detailed information about our local perinatal ATAPS providers contact Anna Langley at GPA.
This program is free. The person does not need to be in receipt of a health care card and the perinatal ATAPS provider will not charge a gap fee.
