The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing has provided funding to support rural communities affected by drought.

The Mental Health Support for Drought Affected Communities Initiative initially provided $10.1 million over two years (2007-2009) to build the capacity of rural and remote drought affected communities to respond to the psychological impact of drought.  This funding has now been extended to consolidate program activities and outcomes.

General Practice Alliance South Gippsland has now had this funding extended until 30th June 2011. However during this extended funding period, the role definition has changed to that of Rural Community Support to support a wide range of programs, including drought recovery support. The emphasis continues to be on developing and implementing a sustainable approach to mental health support in affected communities.
